Providing You With the Very Best Dental Care.
How to Take Charge of Your Oral Health
In a recent post, we explained why it’s so important to keep your dental cleanings. But maintaining good oral health involves more than just going to the dentist every six months. Here are some tips to help you look after those pearly whites all year long:
Brush at least twice a day
Hopefully, you’re already in the habit of doing this. If not, remember to brush after meals. The toothbrush you use should have a small head for better access to back teeth.
Notice the bristles are no longer soft? Then it’s probably time for a new toothbrush. Your dentist can help you find the toothbrush that’s right for you during your next cleaning.
Use the right toothpaste
Fluoride works to harden tooth enamel and reduce your risk of cavities/decay. So make sure you opt for a fluoridated toothpaste. Again, the staff at your dentist office should be able to provide recommendations if needed.
Floss your teeth daily
Here’s another important oral health care tip. Plaque buildup can lead to gum disease and, in more severe cases, bone loss. So make it a point to floss at least once a day.
Limit acidic drinks
Many of us, including children, love soft drinks and fruit juices. Unfortunately, as tasty as these beverages may be, they can wreak havoc on your teeth. Food acids soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in enamel, causing cavities.
Here at BeaverBrooke Dental, we recommend sticking to water as much as possible. Think of such drinks as a special treat and only drink them in moderation.
Stick to a healthy diet
Do you admit to having a sweet tooth? As much of a challenge as it may be at times, limit your consumption of sugary foods. Bacteria in dental plaque change sugars into acids, which can do quite the number on your teeth.
